Qira’at al-Asharah Course

Explore the Ten Authentic Readings of the Quran

Deepen your knowledge of Quran recitation through our Qira’at al-Asharah Course—a structured study of the ten canonical readings of the Holy Quran. This course is designed for learners who want to advance beyond foundational Tajweed and explore the carefully transmitted principles, rules, and differences of the Qira’at.

At IQRA Academy, we bring together theoretical study and guided recitation to help students understand what they are reading, recognise the differences between transmissions, and develop accuracy through consistent practice.

What Is Qira’at al-Asharah?

Qira’at al-Asharah are recognised traditions of Quran recitation transmitted through generations of reciters. They include established differences in pronunciation and, at particular places, word forms and grammatical expression.

The Qira’at are not simply melodies, accents, or personal styles. Each reading follows a defined tradition with its own transmitted rules. Studying them offers a deeper appreciation of Quranic preservation and the richness of its expression.

The Ten Readings

The course introduces the readings associated with these ten renowned imams:

  1. Imam Nafi‘ al-Madani
  2. Imam Ibn Kathir al-Makki
  3. Imam Abu ‘Amr al-Basri
  4. Imam Ibn ‘Amir ash-Shami
  5. Imam ‘Asim al-Kufi
  6. Imam Hamzah al-Kufi
  7. Imam Al-Kisa’i al-Kufi
  8. Imam Abu Ja‘far al-Madani
  9. Imam Ya‘qub al-Hadrami
  10. Imam Khalaf al-‘Ashir

Students explore the relationship between these readings and their recognised transmissions, building understanding progressively rather than treating them as interchangeable recitation styles.

What You Will Study ?

1. Foundations of the Science of Qira’at

Develop an understanding of the terminology used throughout the discipline:

  • Qira’ah: A reading associated with a recognised imam.
  • Riwayah: A transmission of that reading through a narrator.
  • Tariq: A particular route of transmission.
  • Wajh: A permitted recitation option within the route being studied.

You will also learn why the selected transmission route matters and why recitation options must be applied consistently.

2. Tajweed and Pronunciation Review

Strengthen the practical skills needed for advanced recitation, including:

  • Makharij al-Huruf: The articulation points of Arabic letters.
  • Sifat al-Huruf: The characteristics of those letters.
  • Accurate vowel pronunciation and controlled elongation.
  • Clear application of relevant merging, concealment, and nasalisation rules.
  • Recognition and correction of recitation errors.

This foundation supports careful study of the differences between readings.

3. Usul: Recurring Principles

Study the general rules that recur throughout a reading or transmission. Depending on the reading and route, these may include:

  • Madd and Qasr: Elongation and shortening.
  • Hamzah: Its pronunciation and transmitted treatments.
  • Idgham and Izhar: Merging and clear pronunciation.
  • Imalah and Taqlil: Particular transmitted vowel inclinations.
  • Naql: Transfer of a hamzah’s vowel in specified circumstances.
  • Rules involving Ha’ al-Kinayah, the attached pronoun ha’.
  • Rules involving Mim al-Jam‘, the plural mim.
  • Particular treatments of certain added and possessive ya’ letters.

Each principle is studied with examples and applied through recitation.

4. Farsh al-Huruf: Word-Specific Differences

Explore differences found in particular words and verses that require individual study. You will practise identifying the relevant reading, understanding the transmitted form, and reciting it accurately in context.

Comparative exercises help students distinguish recurring rules from differences that must be learned at specific locations.

5. Starting, Stopping, and Connecting

Develop greater awareness of Waqf and Ibtida’—where and how to stop and begin recitation. Study relevant reading-specific forms when stopping, alongside the treatment of the Basmalah and connections between Surahs within the tradition being learned.

6. Listening and Guided Oral Practice

Qira’at study requires more than reading written explanations. Through attentive listening, repetition, and teacher feedback, students work on reproducing the required sounds and applying the correct rules.

Practice focuses on accuracy, consistency, and retaining distinctions between readings.

7. Comparative Recitation

As understanding develops, students compare selected passages across readings and transmissions. This helps them recognise similarities and differences without unintentionally mixing rules from different routes.

More advanced combined recitation should follow the teacher’s chosen method and the student’s readiness.

Learning Approach

Lessons progress from explanation to demonstration, practice, correction, and revision. Students work through manageable portions, review earlier material regularly, and develop their knowledge alongside their oral recitation skills.

The pace of study should reflect each learner’s existing ability, preparation, and consistency. Advanced Qira’at study requires patience and sustained practice; it is a discipline to develop carefully over time.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is particularly suited to:

  • Students with a strong foundation in Quran reading and Tajweed.
  • Huffaz who wish to broaden their recitation studies.
  • Quran teachers seeking deeper knowledge of the readings.
  • Students of Islamic studies interested in Quranic transmission.
  • Dedicated learners preparing for further specialist study.

Learners who are still developing basic fluency should strengthen their Quran reading and Tajweed before beginning advanced practical work.

Learning Outcomes

Through study and regular practice, students will work towards the ability to:

  • Explain the main terminology of Qira’at.
  • Identify the ten imams and distinguish readings from transmissions.
  • Apply the recurring principles of the readings studied.
  • Recognise and recite selected word-specific differences.
  • Maintain consistency within the prescribed transmission route.
  • Improve listening accuracy and respond effectively to correction.
  • Approach further Qira’at study with a stronger theoretical and practical foundation.

Course Completion and Ijazah

An Ijazah is an authorisation granted by a qualified teacher after the required recitation and assessment. It is distinct from a course attendance or completion certificate and is not awarded automatically through enrolment.

Where an Ijazah pathway is offered, students must fulfil the teacher’s requirements for the specified reading, transmission, or collection of readings.
